As a Journeyman I hereby covenant to the following:
I. I Covenant to total confidentiality. What is said in the group stays in the group. NO EXCEPTIONS. Period. I understand that breaking this code betrays all of my brothers who trusted me with their story, struggles, and vulnerability. I understand that breaking this code might lead to significant consequences on other people’s lives; and that I could be dismissed from the program altogether.
II. I Covenant to provide my spiritual mentor with contact information for some of the closest people in my life; fully comfortable with him reaching out to them to inquire about me in deep yet appropriate ways; at his discretion.
III. I Covenant to maintain complete moral integrity in both my public and private life. I understand that moral integrity is rooted in God‘s love and willful direction for my life. I understand that it involves doing what God says is best for me and His purposes— not necessarily what I desire or what I naturally find pleasurable.
IV. I Covenant to become fully known to my brothers and Journeymen Mentor for the purpose of my growth, holiness, and happiness. I believe that God’s prescription for deep community is not a suggestion but a wise mandate for my life to be enveloped in.
V. I Covenant that I will take direct and sometimes unfiltered feedback. I will do everything in my power to receive it in love and learn from it. I will avoid defensiveness, realizing that when I defend, I lose the opportunity to learn deeply. I am committed to being open; examining myself—my personality, my past, my habits, my anger and my responses to people. I want to learn, and I want to change so I can be more like Jesus The Christ in every fiber of my being.
VI. I Covenant that I understand that this mentoring/discipleship program is based upon Jesus The Christ, His message, and His plan for my life. I want to grow as a person according to that plan. I understand that my Journeymen Mentor will push me towards that end; and that all other agendas and superficialities are counted as lost.
VII. I Covenant to become an ‘all-in’ Christ-following: son, brother, friend, and future disciple-maker. I’ll make the necessary steps towards becoming an ‘all-in’ Christ-following husband and father one day unless resoundingly convicted by God into a life of singlehood for the explicit purpose of glorifying his name without restraint. I resolve that anything else is a total and complete waste of my life.
VIII. I Covenant that I have discussed this with my family and loved ones and that they support this program. Those around me are willing to sacrifice the time they have with me so that I can attend the sessions; and more importantly, do the significant reading and rigorous work set before me—for the goal of becoming a godlier man; and hopefully future husband, father, and leader. If those around me are not willing to support me, I covenant that I have at least spoken with them and have counted the cost of this journey as worth the risk of losing relationships. I have decided that my personal growth towards Jesus is more important than stunting my growth for the approval of people around me... including my family or girlfriend. Therefore, I covenant to do what is required of me no matter what opposition I face from family and friends...relinquishing ALL excuses...right here...right now. Luke 12:51–53
IX. I Covenant that I am committed to attend every single meeting...flawlessly on time. I will always have my entire work done...NO EXCEPTIONS. (unless providentially hindered). As our schedule is confirmed at our first gathering, (which is the first retreat), I will manage my other commitments around the dates that are scheduled and mutually agreed upon by the group. I Covenant my commitment to the entire year and to the entire requirements. I will finish strong—Period, End of story.
X. I Covenant that, at some point in the future; (even if 5 or 10 years down the road) when the Lord lets me know that I am ready, I will become a mentor and possibly even lead a group like this through The Journeymen Discipleship Program or one similar to its guiding principles.
XI. I Covenant to maintain great intentionality regarding how I wisely steward the precious gift of time that the God of the universe has granted me for His purposes throughout the year. (Ephesians 5:15-17) I will seek to understand the will of the Lord when making decisions in light of “good” opportunities which may arise; that in this season of my life, may serve as distractions from my personal growth in Jesus.
XII. I finally Covenant that I will allow God to be God in my life. Joyfully satisfied with my design as a dependent and needy child of God.
